Welcome to First Grade

Week: March 24-28, 2008

We take our Spelling Test every Friday. Your child will bring home a list of words every Monday. They are to practice writing the words 3 times each, and writing the Dictation sentence. This homework is due back on Friday of this week. Please do not send the homework in before Friday, because they will need the words to study on Thursday night for Friday's test. This week's words are a review:

Please help your child practice writing their numbers from 1 to 50, as well as writing to 100 by 5's and 10's, and writing to 50 by 2's. They also should be able to add the following doubles:

0+0=0
1+1=2
2+2=4
3+3=6
4+4=8
5+5=10
6+6=12
7+7=14
8+8=16
9+9=18
10+10=20

They should be able to subtract the following doubles:
20-10=10
18-9=9
16-8=8
14-7=7
12-6=6
10-5=5
8-4=4
6-3=3
4-2=2
2-1=1

They should be able to name the numbers in a Fact Family, and write two addition and two subtraction facts for each Fact Family:
Fact Family numbers: 3, 5, 8
3+5=8
5+3=8
8-3=5
8-5=3
Your child should be able to answer questions about a graph. They should recognize each coin: penny, nickel, dime, and quarter, and be able to tell you the value of each. Your child should be able to read the time on a clock for hour, and 1/2 hour.

Please remember to study the light blue vocabulary words on a ring. This ring of words needs to stay in the backpack when not being studied, as we add to it in the classroom throughout the week.
Reading each night for at least 15 minutes is very important. I know this is not always possible every night due to the many outside activities, so please listen to and read to your child as often as possible. Please remember to record your child's reading in their Reading Log.
