Senior Star Volunteers Sparkle with Sincerity and Spunk!

As someone once said, "You can not do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good you can do." The spirit of this message is evident in a group of super senior citizens who volunteer their time to Pine Tree ISD. These generous individuals offer their time on a regular basis.

“When we gather, there is always some fun involved”, says Pine Tree Volunteer Coordinator, Rhonda Barnes. “I can always count on a good story and a laugh when these wonderful women get together.”

Cathy Shipp, executive director of the PT Education Foundation is very grateful for their efforts. “We can always depend on these saints who serve as an inspiration to me and so many others with their willingness to continue to serve our community,” says Shipp.
Volunteer Freida Baker is a member of Pine Tree’s first graduating class in 1937. She stated that each year, a new grade was added until her class reached the 11th grade which was the first graduating class. “Back then, you only went to the 11th grade”.
Velma Knowles, 95, a retired Pine Tree teacher said, “At this age, you begin to feel a little useless and the volunteer job makes me feel better about myself and my age.”
Most all of the volunteers had children to graduate from Pine Tree and were actively involved with their education. “Volunteering for the school makes you feel like you still have a part in education even though your children are long ago graduated,” stated one of the volunteers.
Most all agreed with volunteer Opal Gilmore who said, “I retired from my job around the same time as I lost my husband. I had always been busy and felt needed either in my job or by my family. The opportunity to volunteer for the school met my needs. And, I certainly enjoy the fellowship.
Pauline Steed stated that she moved to this area in 1992 and was invited to come and volunteer. “Since my husband was a school teacher, it seemed a logical place for me to volunteer and meet people.”
Dorothy Broussard said, “The school makes us feel so welcome and it feels good to be appreciated.”

Several of the senior volunteers said that they had children that were in the same class, and as one stated, “Volunteering together keeps me connected with Pine Tree and of course, I enjoy doing the work.”
“And, work they do!” states Shipp. “When the Foundation has invitations for an event - such as the upcoming May 3rd Beacon Awards Banquet- ready to be stuffed for mailing, the ladies come early and stay until the job is done. These ladies exemplify the term ‘beacon!’
