Many parents ask about what they can do at home to help their child learn. Here is a list of some of the things we are learning in the classroom. You may practice these at home with your child.
*Counting to 100. (Watch those teen numbers. Be careful not to skip any.)
*Recognize numerals 1-20
*Say the alphabet. (Say it - not sing it.)
*Name the days of the week and the months of the year.
*Name the colors.
*Say your full name.
*Say the names of and sounds for all of the letters in the alphabet. (
*Build patterns with colored cubes.
*Read these words by sight. (A, I, is, the, my, can, see, in, am, we, this, like, to, go, and, at, here, me, on, up, look, this, it, come)
*Learning the parts of a sentence. (Where does the sentence begin and end? Find a letter, a word, and a space in the sentence.)
*Recognize words that rhyme. Make up your own rhyming word.
Write numerals 1-10.
Recognize numerals 1-20.
One of the best ways to help your child is to spent time playing games with them. Board games are fun for counting and folowing directions.
If possible, find some time each day to read to your child and talk with your child about the story. Your child will be bringing books home that he or she can read. This is so much fun for them. Even though they are beginning to learn to read on their own they still need to hear the longer more detailed stories from the library. Have fun reading with your child. This is a great way for them to learn new vocabulary and story structure. |
