General requirements: The prerequisite of this course is keyboarding. (one-half to one credit) This course is recommended for students in Grade 9 – 10.
Introduction: Students implement personal and interpersonal skills to strengthen individual performance in the workplace and in society and to make a successful transition to the workforce and/or postsecondary education. Students apply skills to address business applications of emerging technologies.
Objectives:
Knowledge and skills:
The student develops skills for success in the workplace. The student is expected to:
1. locate and interpret written information;
2. incorporate supplementary resources and references;
3. demonstrate active listening through oral and written feedback;
4. demonstrate productive work habits and attitudes, for example, dependability and punctuality;
5. organize ideas logically and sequentially.
The student selects appropriate technology to address business needs. The student is expected to:
1. identify and explain the functions of various types technology, hardware, and software used in business;
2. explore functions of emerging technologies;
3. list available hardware and software most appropriate for specific tasks.
The student applied word processing technology. The student is expected to:
1. identify customary styled of business documents;
2. improve the touch-system skill using the keyboard to input data;
3. utilize hardware and software flexibility needed to produce documents to address different computer applications;
4. demonstrate basic writing techniques;
5. edit a variety of written documents;
6. produce business documents, including:
• business letter;
• business reports, integrating charts, and graphics;
• research papers;
• statistical data tables;
• newsletters;
• resumes
The student applies spreadsheet technology. The student is expected to:
1. perform correct mathematical processes, including:
• addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division;
• percentages and decimals;
• order of operations principle;
• estimation;
• prediction of patterns of data.
2. formulate and produce solutions to a variety of business problems, such as:
• budget, personal, and business;
• payroll;
• inventory;
• invoices;
• balance sheets;
• profit and loss statements;
• income tax preparations;
• charts and graphs;
• conversion of foreign currencies.
The teacher will utilize the following methodologies to assist students accomplishing the TEKS objectives:

The teacher will utilize Microsoft Excel to assist students to achieve the spread sheet objectives stated on left.
The student applies database technology. The student is expected to:
1. differentiate the nature and interrelationships of fields, records, and files in databases;
2. perform data management procedures, including:
locate ,sort and organize data;
search and query data;
retrieve data;
export and import data
3. produce and analyze business reports.
The student exchanges information via telecommunications technology with appropriate supervision. The student is expected to:
1. identify an describe the different components of the telecommunications industry;
2. send and receive information using electronic methods, such as mail, image transfer, remote bulletin board access, access of on-line information services, and emerging technologies;
3. evaluate telecommunications methods for specific business needs, including:
cost (locally, nationally, and internationally;
convenience;
availability
4. model acceptable telecommunications ethnics and etiquette and follow guidelines and laws.
The student applies desktop publishing technology. The student is expected to:
1. identify technologies available for desktop publishing;
2. identify customary standards and styles of desktop publishing;
3. create desktop publications importing text and graphics;
4. create an instructional manual.
The student applies presentation management technology. The student is expected to:
1. identify the guidelines for using graphics, fonts, and special effects in presentations;
2. analyze the effectiveness of multimedia presentations;
3. determine the appropriate technology to create and deliver an effective presentation.
The student identifies the concepts of a computer network. The student is expected to:
1. describe the components necessary to establish a network;
2. describe the factors influencing the selection of a networking system;
3. compare the resources available on various types of networks.
The student analyzes computer operating systems and emerging technologies. The student is expected to:
1. describe various types of operating systems, environments, and utilities;
2. compare the functions and features of different operating systems, environments, and utilities;
3. demonstrate operating system commands.
The teacher will utilize Microsoft Access to assist students to achieve the database objectives stated on left.
The teacher will utilize Internet to achieve telecommunications technology objectives stated on left.
The teacher will utilize Webpage to achieve the desktop publishing objectives stated on left.
The teacher will utilize Microsoft PowerPoint to achieve the presentation management technology objectives stated on left.
