Manufacturing Systems
Procedures and Shop Safety

Instructions will be followed. This class is not a “fun” class.
Injury risk is real, present, and immediate.

This class is not recommended for those who lack serious self-discipline.

Bathroom:
Go to the bathroom before entering classroom. Expect to stay in class after entering. Daily bathroom calls will result in revoking of bathroom priviledges. Lack of preparedness means lack of attention. Lack of attention means one is not operating safely. This is Shop Safety Class.

Communication:
Raise your hand for permission to speak. Unauthorized talking is an instigation of horseplay. Unauthorized talking shows one is not focused on the work at hand. Lack of focus means one is unsafe. This is Shop Safety Class.

Conduct:
Conduct equals safety. Improper conduct is unsafe.
Improper conduct can outweigh perfect scores on all other work.
Improper conduct will cause failure of the student this course.
Conduct is monitored. This is Shop Safety Class.

Packets and Paperwork handed out and in:
Legible first and last name in upper left corner, period and date in upper right corner. No proper name, period and date, no grade. Improperly done paperwork means lack of attention. Lack of attention means one is not operating safely. This is Shop Safety Class.

Personal contact:
Keep your hands and your comments to yourself. Unauthorized contact with other persons, others possessions or equipment is horseplay. Horseplay is means one is not operating safely. This is Shop Safety Class.

Supplies:
Bring pencil and pen, a ruler, paper and assigned homework to class. Lack of preparation means lack of attention. Lack of attention renders one unsafe. This is Shop Safety Class.

No horseplay. No back talk. No disrespect of faculty. No hesitation to obey or questioning of instructor decisions. This is Shop Safety Class.
With order in this class, we’ll have no injuries.

Requirements and Materials

The school can provide welding helmets, torch goggles, safety glasses, coveralls, welding gloves, common welding and brazing rods, bottled gasses, saw blades and materials for assigned projects. Students will purchase equipment they render unfit for use.

Loose clothing, including sagging pants, are a safety hazard, and not allowed.

The student will provide materials for voluntary projects.

To be brought to class every period:
Pen
Pencils (mechanical pencil is preferred, regular pencil is fine)
Erasers
Eraser shield
Scale ruler (triangular, has 6 scales)
Paper
Map color pencils (for wiring diagrams)
2 1/2" or 3" 3-ring notebook
A plastic case is good for keeping up with materials

Objects thrown in class will be taken up and likely not returned.

To be on hand and ready for use later in tool phase:
Leather boots or high-top shoes for welding and torch work
Rag for wiping hands
Hair tie, pins or clips for long hair
A cap may be useful
Key type locker padlock with key for instuctor.
Those not providing boots will not be allowed to use torch or welder for safety reasons.
Ear plugs may be handy.

THOSE IMPROPERLY CARING FOR SHOP-PROVIDED SAFETY EQUIPMENT WILL FURNISH THIER OWN SAFETY EQUIPMENT THEREAFTER.

Those damaging school property will provide compensation at recipt value.

Each student will compile a manual of shop procedures during the course.
This manual is a tool and will be cared for as such. The manual will be accessed in class for study, added to regularly, and tested over regularly.

To all Students in Mr. Lipe’s classes:

No student will operate any equipment (woodworking tools or metal working tools, including hammers and other hand tools) unless they are working on an assignment for the instructor or working on a project that has been approved by the instructor.

Students working on assignments and/or projects are expected to clean up after themselves and put up all tools and equipment used.
Clean up is a safety requirement and part of the student’s responsibility on an assignment and/or project.

STUDENTS CLEAN ROOM 702 SHOP. CUSTODIANS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO CLEAN ROOM 702.
