CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH

Each month, PT Middle 7 will focus on a character trait. Character development emphasis is dedicated to communicating sound values to our students about the kind of school and work place we would like to enjoy. Through enphasis on various traits throughout the year, we are leading our kids to be caring, responsible, and productive citizens.

MARCH: COURAGE

The character trait for March is COURAGE. Courage is being brave enough to do what you should do even when you are afraid.

What’s the difference between courage and thrill seeking? Danger may be present in both. However, courageous actions are undertaken because the risk of inaction is not tolerable. Confronting danger for the sake of thrills rarely accomplishes anything of enduring significance or of consequence based on our convictions. Courage is bravery at what is significant. The risk is temporarily ignored so you can do what should be done.

Fear is a natural response intended to protect us. Not all fears are bad. Recklessly ignoring traffic when crossing a street would not be called courage. But rushing to rescue a child reaching for a hot stove is courageous.

The types of heroes you admire are a good way to gain insight into what you feel is important. Real-life heroes often view their actions as unimportant compared to the value of the purpose behind them. You are expected to stand up for what you believe…that takes courage. Often times, it is easier for kids to give in to peer pressure. But, it takes a courageous leader to do the right thing even when it has consequences.

Be brave this month. Don’t give in to peer pressure. Stand up for what you believe in. Be a leader!

Each Friday, I will announce the names of students who have been nominated by their teachers for showing peace. Those students will be rewarded with a certificate and a cold Dr. Pepper.

Listen for your name!
