PTHS Art Students Earn Medals at State Competition
Pine Tree High School Art Department is to be congratulated for recent awards at the annual Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE). At the Area competition, six Pine Tree students were winners out of over 400 competitors.
These students under the direction of Mary Graham, Advanced Art instructor, Mary Squier, Multimedia instructor of Pine Tree HS, and Amy Brown, Junior High Art instructor, competed in the recent state competition and earned top honors.
Michael McCrory, Crystal Zuniga, Emily Phelps, Brenda Rangel, Susan Kim and Jackie Davila were the 6 area winners who moved on to the state competition held April 12, 2008 in Clearlake at the University of Houston. These six were judged again with approximately 1,200 other competitors from around the state.
Three of these students earned medals at the state level:
Michael Mc Crory, Jackie Davila, Crystal Zuniga
Students are judged on merit of their work such as quality of craftsmanship, strength of composition, handling of the medium(s), and personal vision. They are individually interviewed by a judge and are expected to speak about their artwork and cover these topics. They score 1 to 4 with 4 being the highest they can achieve.
Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) is an annual competition sponsored by the Texas Art Educators Association. It is conducted in the same fashion as a UIL event with regional winners. Although not a UIL sanctioned competition, VASE uses UIL rules.
