    Mrs. Joyce Moomau

Reading is fun! I appreciate you reading with your child. All children benefit from lots of practice, but please, PLEASE, hesitate to tell your child a word when he appears stuck. Encourage your child to use strategies---looking at picture, rereading, sounding out word, etc. It's okay to give clues such as remember "g" has 2 sounds or "ow" is the sound you hear in yellow or cow, but let your child do the decoding. After he decodes the word, have your child reread the whole sentence so your child comprehends the meaning of the sentence.

First graders will need to recognize coins and know their money value. Using money on a regular basis is the best way for your child to become familiar with money. Please allow your child to make small purchases (such as an apple) to gain experience with money transactions.
