National Junior Honor Society |
Students are eligible to be considered for NJHS after completing the first semester of their 8th grade year at Pine Tree Junior High School. Eligibility is based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A minimum overall average of 93 is required. This average is calculated by averaging first semester of the eighth grade year and the fall and spring semester of the seventh grader year.
Students desiring to be selected for membership in NJHS should pay due attention to grades, become involved in school activities of choice, and take advantage of service opportunities. Early in the spring semester of a student's eighth grade year, students who qualify academically will be notified and given the opportunity to complete an application. This application will be used as a basis of evaluation for membership. Selection will actually be determined by the NJHS Faculty Advisory Counsel in February or early April. Students and parents will be notified of acceptance. The induction ceremony is generally held in late April.
Students who fail to qualify their eighth grade year may be considered again after the first semester of their ninth grade year. NJHS sponsor is Linda Nelson. |

Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALS) |
PALS is a ninth grade service organization. The PALS goal is to encourage others and to meet some of the needs of Pine Tree students and their families. Applications for membership are taken in April. PALS selection is determined by a matrix system which includes teacher input forms, attendance/behavior forms, an essay, and an interview. Sixteen to eighteen students are selected to serve. The PALS activities include numerous on-campus activities, several elementary school visits, and various community service projects.
On the PTJH campus, PALS celebrate every Pine Tree Jr. High student's birthday with a treat, a song, or even a crown for the day! These treats are delivered during advisory. The PALS participate in Empathy Day at the junior high by assigning each member either a physical or emotional situation for the day. PALS also sponsor the "Coats for Kids" drive by collecting coats and jeans for families in the community. As a fundraiser, the PALS run the concession stand during the volleyball and basketall games to provide snacks and drinks for the fans and players, while earning money for their projects. During the month of December, money is raised for five to seven less fortunate families on our campus with the ever popular "Chain LINK Race". PALS members sell the chain links and the eighth and ninth grade advisory classes compete to see which class will have the longest chain. In the month of February, the PALS raise money for the Leukemia Foundation with a "Pennies for Pasta" drive.
Each PAL is assigned a student on the elementary campus to be their PALee. The PALS travel to the elementary school several times during the year to visit their "PALee." The PALS help their PALee with homework, help them write a book "All About Me!", read to them, work puzzles, and play games. This mentoring program forges friendship that last forever.
PALS sponsor is Karen Darby. |

Stargazers |
The 8th Grade Science Department would like to tell you about our Stargazer's Club. It is open to anyone interested in the stars! Our activities include identifying constellations, observing planets, stars, and nebulas through a telescope, and having a great time doing it! (One night, we thought we spotted a UFO, but it was only Saturn! Some students were disappointed that the earth was not going to be invaded by aliens.)
We have about four stargazing nights a year, usually corresponding with the 8th grade unit on space in April. Any parents and younger brothers and sisters are welcome. If there are cloudy skies or rain, the meeting will be rescheduled the following week. (Hint - if you walk outside and don't see any stars, it's cloudy!) Meetings are held in front of the band hall or behind the science wing at Pine Tree Jr. High School.
Stargazers sponsor is Karen Darby. |
