Annual Staff
This elective is
designed for students who want to learn and practice the principles of yearbook
and production. Students will be given the opportunity to use the various
skills learned in the actual production of the Jr. High Yearbook. This class
requires the recommendation and signature of the 7th grade yearbook advisor
or Language Arts/English teacher.

Art
Students may choose
this course for one semester. This class deals with the most common color
problems every artist will encounter. Students will get practice mixing and
applying colors.

Art I
Art I is the beginning
level of art and is a prerequisite for all advanced art courses. Students
learn the basic use of the art elements and principles through a variety
of experiences in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects. A
variety of techniques such as scratch board, printmaking and sculpture, and
macrame are introduced, as well as painting and drawing. This course meets
the requirements for the fine arts credit toward the State's Recommended
graduation plan.

Band I
The ninth grade band
marches during football season. Students also participates in All-Regional
Band Audition and Solo and Ensemble contest. Full band participates in UIL
Concert and Sight Reading Contest and performs two concerts during the year.
Band meet s every day and therefore counts as 2 electives. Prerequisite

Band
The Pine Tree Junior
High Band consists of 8th graders. The numbers of students in this band averages
65 per year. The students involved in band are highly motivated and talented
individuals who are in band for many reasons. Some of these reasons include
learning and perfecting an instrument, a chance to build their self-confidence
through their performances, to feel a sense of "belonging" to a family within
the school, and to have fun! Each year the band performs at school
pep-rallies, football games, parades, Concert and UIL Contest. As individual
players, they may choose to participate in U.I.L. All Region BAnd and U.I.L.
Solo and Ensemble. The 8th grade band represents Pine Tree Junior High School well
in the community and has a consistent reputation of First Division Ratings
at UIL Contest.

Career Connections
Occupational Studies
prepares students for a career decision and givess insight into possible
choices. Career interest and personal surveys are given to help students
choose an occupation which would be both enjoyable and profitable. This course
includes a field trip, computer lab work, guest speakers, and a project.

Career Investigations
This elective is
designed to develop students' awareness of their future and the importance
of initiating career exploration and planning at an early age. This course
allows for self-examination and discovery of each one's aptitude and ability
while comparing possible career choices. It will include an overview of the
five major career clusters, as well as the opportunity to use career find
computer software.

Choir
Choir I is a select
performing ensemble. Membership is by instructor approval and audition. Choral
techniques are developed through more advanced choral literature. A variety
of musical styles are studied including : motets, madrigals, spirituals,
contemporary, popular, and Broadway show tunes, as well as standard choral
literature. Several concerts are presented throughout the year in addition
to participation in all UIL contests. This course fulfills the requirement
for Fine Arts credit on the Recommended graduation plan.

Choir
The 8th grade choir
is a select performing ensemble. Membership is by audition and instructor
approval. Fundamental four-part choral techniques are taught through a variety
of choral literature. Four-part sight reading skills are also developed.
Several concerts are presented throughout the year in addition to participation
in All-Region choir auditions, Solo-Ensemble Contests, and UIL Concert and
Sight Reading Contests.

Construction Systems
An exploratory
course which addresses the utilization of construction for residential and
civil structures. Students study and use common construction tools, machines,
materials, and processes. Experiences in planning and controlling construction
systems and projects allow students to explore the organizational structures
and management strategies in construction. |

Computer Literacy
Computer Literacy, a one semester course, teaches students about computers, being able to use the computer as a tool, and being able to communicate instructions to the computer. Activities will include learning basic skills in Word Processing, Access (database), Excel (spreadsheet), PowerPoint, and the Internet. PowerPoint is multimedia software that uses sound, graphics, and animations.

German I & II
German I - Introduces
the student to the basic grammar, verb conjugation, and basic vocabulary
of German. The student will learn to read, write, speak, and understand basic
sentences and conversation using known vocabulary and grammar facts. Also,
the student is familiarized with the culture of German speaking nations.
German II - A continuation and expansion of German I. Students will build
upon their acquired knowledge of German by reading books/magazines, translations,
conversations, writing assignments, plays, music and art in addition to vocabulary
and grammar. Prerequisite : German I

Exploring Manufacturing Technology
This introductory
course is a broad based course covering : power construction, power
mechanics, and safety. Students spend time in the laboratory practicing the concepts and procedures studied in the classroom.

Health
Health education is
a required course for all high school students. The student will study good
physical and mental health and realize the importance of each of these issues. |

Keyboarding
Computer keyboarding,
a one semester class, teaches the keyboard, refines techniques, and develops
speed. (15-30 wam. 2/3 errors). It provides an introduction to tables, charts,
personal and business letters, themes and reports. Personal use applications
with proofreading skills emphasized.

Manufacturing Systems
This is an activity
based elective which focuses on material processing and the management components
of a manufacturing activity in the free enterprise economic system. The study
of material processing includes techniques of transforming material through
changing their characteristics, shape, size, and structure by casting, forming,
separating, conditioning, assembling, and finishing techniques. The study
of management includes planning, organizing, directing, and controlling personnel
to design, engineer, produce, and market.

Physical Education
8th - Pine Tree
furnishes a shirt and pair of shorts to each student enrolled in physical
education. Physical education teachers place a great deal of emphasis on
"lifetime" sports and activities. Conditioning is also becoming a more integral
part of physical education as cardiovascular and respiratory strength and
stressed. The American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation,
and Dance physical fitness test is given to each student at the beginning
and end of each semester.

Multimedia
An exploratory course that focuses on the communication systems humans use to compose, send, receive, and interpret information and ideas. The emphasis is on visual and electronic communication technologies. Experiences may include: computer multimedia with sound, graphics, animations, word processing, Internet, video and audio recording. 3-D software used are Bryce 5 and Animation Master. Other projects are created using Painter 7, Photoshop, and html web paging.

Skills for Life
This course is
designed to provide students the opportunity to learn skills that will help
them to become more independent. Content emphasizes learning personal and
time management skills, personal health, nutrition and a unit on basic food
preparation. Goal setting, decision making, peer pressure, and how to get
along with others are studied in personal and family relationships. Basic
construction skills, how to select and care for clothing, and simple repair
skills are taught in clothing. Factors involved in responsible parenting
are stressed along with simple child care skills during a unit of child care
and development. Students will be required to purchase materials for the
construction project during clothing. The cost is approximately $15.00. Life
Management Skill students have the opportunity to join Family, Career, Communication
Leaders of America. This youth organization stress leadership skills and
personal development by participation in school and community projects. |
Personal and Family Development
The content in
this laboratory course is all inclusive of the composition of the home economics
discipline. Students may expect to acquire knowledge and skills related to
family living, child development, clothing and textiles, housing, management,
consumer economics and responsibilities, food and nutrition, personal and
family health, and the relationship between the home and the work place.
Emphasis is placed on taking responsibility for actions, basic needs of children,
nutrition, decision making, managing resources, surviving in the marketplace,
career opportunities and preparation requirements, and managing the dual
roles of homemaker and wage earner.

Physical Education
Foundations of Personal
Fitness is the first semester course which stresses nutrition, health factors,
consumer issues, stress, and fitness. Fall team sports are also included.
Lifetime activities are introduced during the second semester that includes
bowling, weight training, tennis, aerobics, basketball, table tennis, badminton,
and swimming. Pine Tree ISD furnishes a shirt and shorts to each student
enrolled in Physical Education. The American Association of Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance Physical Fitness Test is given to each student
at the beginning and end of the course.

Spanish II
A continuation of Spanish I. Students will build upon their
acquired knowledge of Spanish by reading books/magazines, translations, conversations,
writing assignments, plays, music and art in addition to vocabulary and grammar.

Precision Prep
The Precision Prep class
will provide dance instruction to students who are interested in preparing
for the Pirate Precision try-outs. Motor skills basic to efficient movement,
dance/drill team terminology, and dance/drill team technique will be taught
in this course. This is a very disciplined class modeled after things that
are expected in drill team. The class will participate in some performances
during the school year. Each member is required to purchase a T-shirt, which
will be worn to school on game days and to the pep rallies. Appropriate dance
attire is required.

period will be guided practice, providing students the opportunity to practice

Theater Arts (Drama)
Drama - A one
semester elective providing a variety of theater experiences. In addition
to creative dramatics including pantomime and improvisation, puppetry, Reader's
Theater, public speaking, and plays will be done for audiences. It is a participation
class.
Advanced Drama - This full year elective prepares students to compete in
the UIL One Act Play, Oral Reading, Impromptu Speaking and Modern Oratory.
In addition to the UIL events, the students will do many performances in
all other aspects of theater. Live audiences will be invited to all presentations.
Requires the recommendation of the 7th grade theater teacher. |

UIL Math/Science Team
The UIL Math/Science
Team prepares for competition in UIL number sense, calculator applications,
general mathematics, and science. This team currently meeting during advisory,
not as an elective class. Students on the UIL Team are expected to compete
at invitational meets held on Saturdays during the months of October through
March. This class requires the recommendation and signature of the 7th grade
Math/Science coach.

Theater Arts (Drama)
(Meets at the high
school campus) This course presents an overview of theater arts. The first
semester concentrates on performing techniques : pantomime, improvisation,
voice, oral interpretation, play interpretation, structure, and performance.
Members of this class will produce a short play that includes all facets
of theater study. The second semester will focus on the historical development
of drama and its impact on today's theater with emphasis on independent student
research. Preparation and perfection of duets, improvs, and interpretation
pieces are part of the ongoing performance opportunities this semester. Members
of the class will also be participating in a variety of performing competitions,
including UIL events, and will need to be passing all subjects for eligibility.
Students must be enrolled in a theater class to participate in the UIL One
Act Play. Students will travel to tournaments, but outside preparation time
will be kept to a minimum. Approximately three main stage performance opportunities
are available to Theater I.
