Reading at Home/Parent Involvement
Research has shown that children who have reading support at home on a daily basis make greater gains in reading, comprehension and confidence. The child will feel successful and in control when reading books that are on the appropriate level. The parent can interact with the child to encourage risk taking and practice newly learned reading strategies.
Parents can promote reading progress by doing a few helpful things. Listen to your child read every night. Ask the child to predict what might happen in the story-get them ready to read. Allow for mistakes and time for reading work. If the reader is stuck on a difficult word, ask them to start the word and think what would make sense. After a few attempts at the word or word parts and they still need help, just tell them the word and go on reading. Most of all, have fun while reading together and let them see you enjoy reading also.
