A word to parents/guardians about the purpose of the class |
Communication Applications is a one-semester course which is required for graduation. The purpose of the class is to teach good communication skills, and to provide students with opportunities to practice these skills, so they can become Master Communicators. I believe that student success is enhanced by close contact between school and home. Please feel free to contact me so that I can keep you informed of your child's progress. |

A word about grades |
Each grading period, students will get at least seven daily grades and four major test grades. One of the test grades is always related to chapters studied in the Communication Applications textbook. We work from a set of books which is kept in our classroom. One test grade is always written, usually from lecture notes taken in class. The other two major test grades are always performances. |

A word about performance/speech preparation |
Students will be given guidelines and performance dates on the day each performance/speech is introduced to the class. A copy of the grading rubric will be posted in the classroom. Ample time will be given in class, and during tutorials before and after school every day, to prepare for the performance/speech. I encourage students to practice outside of class, as well. Most of our performances are timed, and points are given for being within the time window. Only careful planning in advance will ensure that students will meet all grading criteria. The key to success is practice, practice, practice! |

A word about scheduling |
Because we have much to accomplish, and only one semester in which to do it, our schedule is very carefully planned. Performances/speeches MUST be done on the assigned day. If a student is not prepared on the assigned day, he/she will receive a zero, which cannot be made up. If a student is absent on the day he/she is assigned to give a performance, the student will be expected to perform on the first day he/she returns to class. If the student is not prepared on that day, he/she will receive a zero. If there are extenuating circumstances, a performance MAY be rescheduled, at the teacher's discretion. |
