Art Students Display Creativity At LMFA Invitational Art Show

Teenagers rarely reveal themselves, but give them a brush and some canvas and look out.

A baker's dozen of the Longview area's most expressive young artists bare their souls in the 47th annual Student Invitational at the Longview Museum of Fine Arts, March 10 through April 28.

"Art represents an easel, and expression, of what they think about and what they find amazing or hope for," said Dr. David Brown, a Longview child psychiatrist and museum board member. "A lot of times, it's one of those places where the kids really feel like they can be heard, or can be seen. People are paying attention to their art, and their art may be the best forum for them to feel like what they are doing is important."

Board member Jack Barkley, a Longview caterer, agreed that art gives sometimes reluctant teens an avenue of expression.

"The whole purpose (of the show) from an educational standpoint is to let these kids know that self expression is a way of growing," he said. "Once you know what your self expression is, you have a path for life."

Barkley and other pros are helping the young artists create culinary centerpieces for a fundraiser that kicks off the annual show. Toast of the Town (Barkley is the Toastmaster, get it?) asks the teens to come up with dishes featuring that old stand-by, toast.

Teen artist Austyn Pilgrim, whose graphic design and abstract art are included in the show, was undaunted by the prospect of switching creative gears to the crunchy side.

"I just know we have to come up with things along the lines of having toast in it," the Trinity School of Texas senior said. "There has to be a connection or something or other with toast."

She has learned, though, that art is about expression no matter what the medium.

"You can use art in music form, you can do it by taking pictures," she said. "Most people who become chefs, that's how they express their creativity.
