PTHS Art Students Earn Medals at State Competition

Pine Tree High School Art Department is to be congratulated for recent awards at the annual Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE). At the Area competition, 7 Pine Tree students were winners out of 350 competitors. 29 students under the direction of Mary Graham and Mary Squire, Art instructors from Pine Tree HS competed, and 24 earned top honors.
Three of these students earned medals at the state level: Michael Mc Crory, Jackie Davila and Cristal Zuniga.
The 6 area winners moved on to the state competition held at University of Houston at Clear Lake last week. These six were judged again with approximately 1,500 other competitors from around the state.

Students are judged on merit of their work such as quality of craftsmanship, strength of composition, handling of the medium(s), and personal vision.
They are individually interviewed by a judge and are expected to speak about their artwork and cover these topics. They score 1 to 4 with 4 being the highest they can achieve.

Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) is an annual competition sponsored by the Texas Art Educators Association. It is conducted in the same fashion as a UIL event with regional winners. Although not a UIL sanctioned competition, VASE uses UIL rules.
