Science Classes Hold Junk Yard Car Races |
Pine Tree 7th grade students have been studying force and motion along with simple machines in science class. During the month of November, science teachers had each student create a “Junk Yard Car” made out of recycled materials. Each teacher then held a race during each class period to determine their individual winners. Along with racing their cars down a ramp, students had to tell what materials they used in creating the car and give an example of a least one simple machine used. This Tuesday, December 5th, the winners from each science class will race each other until one overall 7th grade student is named top racer. The top racer, along with the 2nd place finisher, will receive a prize.
The 7th grade science teachers have used this activity for several years now. They feel that students are given an opportunity to apply what they are learning, as well as, creatively recycle materials in building their cars. The students learn how important the wheel and axle is to their car along with understanding key concepts such as air resistance and friction. Pictures of Race
