READING ROUND-UP |
 |
 |
HOWDY,
Welcome to the Reading Round-up. My name is Mrs. Leslie. This program helps students to read on grade level and helps the students prepare for TAKS. Students attend the Reading Round-up in addition to their regular reading class. The lessons are designed to include fluency, word study, and comprehension activities. | |

Ways Parents can Encourage Reading |
1. Read a variety of materials with your child. Help your child understand the meanings of new words. Ask who, what, where, when, and why questions.
2. Take your child to the library.
3. Encourage older children to read to younger children.
4. Plays games that are reading related.
5. Take advantage of spur-of-the-moment reading. (menus, road signs, food labels, etc) |

TARGET THE PROBLEM! |
Comprehension:
Children will usually express their frustration and difficulties in a general way, with statements like "I hate reading!" or "This is stupid!" But if they could, this is how kids might describe how comprehension difficulties affect their reading:
* It takes me so long to read something. It's hard to follow along with everything going on.
* I didn't really get what that book was about.
* Why did that character do that? I just don't get it!
* I'm not sure what the most important parts of the book were.
HOW KIDS CAN HELP THEMSELVES
*Use outlines, maps, and notes.
*Make flash cards of key terms you want to remember.
*Read stories in short sections and make sure you know what happened before you continue reading.
*Ask yourself, "Does this make sense?" If it doesn't, reread it.
*Read with a buddy. Stop every page of so and take turns summarizing what you've read.
*Form mental pictures and images as you read.
